Farm House Garden
The Brief
This extensive farm property in the rolling Marlborough Downs has gardens wrapping around the farmhouse which, while obviously very loved by the previous owners, had sadly become overgrown while the property stood empty. I was brought in by the new owners to restore and redesign the entire site in readiness for it potentially becoming a luxury holiday home for private rental. As someone who loves to visit glamping sites, I was able to make several suggestions for outdoor features that could give it the “wow” factor, while remaining sympathetic to the incredible surrounding landscape. I also quickly identified several potential safety issues that would need to be considered if it was going to be let to guests with young children, alongside approaches that would reduce the maintenance and provide year-round interest. With a site this size, it is essential to build in a maintenance budget if the gardens are to remain to a high standard.
The brief:
To create several seating areas for outdoor eating and socialising, including an outdoor kitchen and potential space for a wood-fired hot tub.
To improve accessibility to main entrances to the house and ensure planting is attractive from all vantage points within the house.
To develop the existing vegetable gardens to provide seasonal fruit, herbs and vegetables for guests to use.
To create a large fire pit and seating area away from the house for night sky viewing.
